[edit] Welcome to Seoul
Seoul is a perfect city for the capital of Korea. First of all, Seoul is located in the center of Korean penisular, and surrounded by beautiful and big rocky mountains which are easier to defend enemy from north. And Han river protected the enemy from South. Besides, Han river was connected to the sea, which is good for transportation, and drinking, farming etc. Along with Han river, there are huge rice field to cultivate. The first name of Seoul city was Wiryesung, and then Hansung, and then Kyungsung and finally it became Seoul city. From BC 18 to AD 475, Wireysung had been the capital city of Baekje, but in AD 475, Baekje moved their capital from WiRyesung to Woongjin, because of the threat from North. The location of Wiryesung is supposed to be the the current Olympic Park in East South of Seoul. There has been a part of remaining Defense wall of Baekje, and we have rebuilt it again, as a part of current Olympic park. In 1392, Chosung Dynasty founded and selected their capital at Hansung, which is current location of Seoul. There are 5 palaces and 1 Shirine of Chosun Dynasty in Seoul. Chosun Dynasty was until 1910, Japanese annexed Korea. After 1945, Republic of Korea has been founded and again we changed the name to Seoul, which is the pure Korean word meaning Capital city. Therefore, total years of Capital city for Seoul is about 1,100 years and it is a long years of history. |
[edit] Han River
The original pure Korean name of Han river was Arisoo. It is one of the longest rivers in Korea,(actually the 4th longest river), and have 2 branch rivers - South Han river and North Han river. And it covers total area of 26,219 sqaure kilometers. North Han river originated from Kumgang Mountain, where is North Korea now, and South Han river from Daeduck Mountain in Kangwon Province. Those 2 rivers meet at Yangsoori, and make a Han river and flows to West sea of Korea. We have used the water for Rise farming, and drinking water, but Korea has rains mostly in 2-3 months of June- September. In the rainy season, it made flood and in the dry season, we suffered shortage of water. To avoid such things, we have built 5 Dams in North Han river, 1 Dam in South Hanriver and 1 Dam in Han river, to control the level of waters. It was so successful, and now we have almost no such terrible things anymore. The Han River and its surrounding area played an important role in Korean history. The Three Kingdoms of Korea fight each others to take control of this land, where the river was used as a transportation route, even to China (via the Yellow Sea). However, the river is no longer actively used for navigation, because its estuary is located at the borders of the two Koreas, barred for entrance by any civilian. |
